Fountains and Art of Miami Beach

Miami Beach has a fair number of fountains, and also a fair bit of public art out there.  The weather has to take its toll on art, and on fountains so they either need maintenance or they need to be out of specialized materials. 

Lawn ornament you say?  This is no ordinary lawn flamingo.  Czech out that paint job.  And how many lawn flamingos have a picture of mom tattooed on their necks? 

Not actually art, this is the carpet in the Miami Beach convention center.  Kind of sporty, kind of fun.  

I never went in this park and never saw anyone else in it either.  I thought it was perhaps some fancy jungle gym, plus it makes neat shadows, but the sign on the park said it was a sound scape.  So perhaps you're supposed to hear things.  I didn't hear anything as I walked by. 

These stones on the walls were either part of the installation, (they were pretty pretty by themselves), or there to keep homeless people from sleeping on the ledges.

And the script "N" hotel had a script "N" fountain as well.  

This is a sculpture of a dove, can't ya tell?  

 And you can use this fountain to keep tabs on the amount of iron oxide in the water.

Look closely, and you can see the water dripping out of these three faucets, one to the left, one to the right, and one straight down.  

The Fountains of Lisbon, by Respighi

He should have written a piece by that name assuming he didn't. Lisbon has tons of fountains.  Some are quite entertaining.  Many of the modern ones are quirky though not all new fountains satisfy.  The first four are from the park near Jeronimos and the next three from expo park. 

This of course is a drinking fountain.

The horses are in the distance.  I guess these are really ponds and not fountains.  

And this is a waterfall, not a fountain!  Near the aquarium box office.  

Yeah, it looks like a volcano.  And it even erupts like one as well.  

This spit of water was one of several flying through the air at Vasco de Gama mall. 

Lisboa Architecture

Pictures of buildings, a fountain and the Elevador de Santa Justa. 

This photo is along the street above FNAC.  On our right is a shopping center.  On the left is a little ice cream/yogurt/gelado store that was doing massive business.  The walkway above goes from the Elevador de Santa Justa to street level on the left of the picture.  They actually cut a gap in the building on the left to put the walkway in. 

The Elevador de Santa Justa lifts you 47 meters high, just off Rossio Square.

Pink building, also known as the Biblioteca Municipal Centro (Central Municipal Library).

I believe this is the same building, else it is next door.  These are close to Campo Pequeno.  If I remember right, this building had a sign on it identifying it as having won an architectural award around 100 years ago.  

And once more into the lurch, the top of the Elevador with people looking out from the viewing platform.  When I first traveled to Lisbon, I was told that Eiffel had designed it, but on later visits it came out that Carmo, a student of Eiffel's had designed it.  The walkway pictured above exits to the right of this picture, and is hidden by the building on the lower right.
